International Aid: UAE Deploys Firefighting Team to Combat Albanian Wildfires

UAE sends firefighting assistance to Albania

The United Arab Emirates has deployed a specialized firefighting team to Albania to assist with the severe wildfires currently affecting the country. This move comes in response to the directives of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, demonstrating the UAE’s commitment to providing international aid and support in times of crisis.

Details of the UAE’s assistance

The Emirati team arrived in Albania on August 11, 2025, and includes experienced firefighting personnel, helicopters, and advanced firefighting equipment and materials. They have been actively engaged in fire suppression efforts, particularly in areas like Petrela and Gramsh. As of August 14, 2025, the UAE team had conducted eight air sorties over affected areas, performing 38 drops with over 71,000 kilograms of water in the Gramsh region alone.

Albania’s wildfire situation and international response

Albania has been battling a series of devastating wildfires fueled by a severe heatwave and strong winds. At the peak of the outbreak, at least 37 forest fires were reported nationwide within a 24-hour period. The fires have resulted in tragic consequences, including one elderly man’s death from smoke inhalation and injuries to eight others. Multiple villages have been evacuated to ensure the safety of residents.

Albania has received assistance from other nations and organizations, including Czechia, Slovakia, Greece, and EU Member States, through efforts such as the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
