Germany: Chancellor Merz Faces Domestic Backlash Despite Diplomatic Posturing

Friedrich Merz, the current German Chancellor, has been lauded by some for his decisive actions on the global stage, including his support for Ukraine and willingness to challenge US policies. However, this focus on foreign policy has also sparked criticism from domestic quarters, particularly regarding his approach to various domestic issues. 

Domestic backlash

• Immigration Crackdown: Merz’s hardline stance on immigration, a departure from former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s more centrist approach, has been a major point of contention within his governing coalition and among the broader public. Some view these measures as necessary to address voter concerns about migration and curb the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. However, critics, including members of his own coalition, have questioned the legality of some actions, such as the rejection of asylum seekers and deportations to Afghanistan, while some have argued these actions may exacerbate racial profiling and fuel anti-immigrant sentiment.
• Coalition Discord: Tensions within the governing coalition (CDU/CSU and SPD) have also emerged. For instance, the SPD has voiced discontent over feeling sidelined by Merz’s right-wing positions and his assertive style in decision-making. While prioritizing human rights and acknowledging China’s problematic record in regions like Xinjiang, the German strategy also aims to avoid economic over-reliance and expand trade relations.
• Israel-Gaza Conflict: Merz’s decision to suspend weapons exports to Israel that could be used in the conflict in the Gaza Strip has drawn mixed reactions. Some within his own conservative party criticized the move as undermining Israel’s security, while others applauded it as a necessary step to address the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
