Bolivia Heads into Historic Runoff Election

Bolivia’s recent presidential election (August 17, 2025) has resulted in an unprecedented runoff between centrist Rodrigo Paz Pereira and right-wing former president Jorge Quiroga. This marks the end of nearly two decades of dominance by the leftist Movement for Socialism (MAS) party.

Early results show Paz Pereira of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC) in the lead with approximately 32.8% of the vote. Quiroga, representing the Alianza coalition, garnered around 26%. The unexpected rise of Paz Pereira, who started the campaign with minimal support in polls, is a significant development.

Bolivia is grappling with its worst economic crisis in decades, characterized by high inflation and dwindling currency reserves, contributing to public dissatisfaction with the MAS party. The ruling left’s internal divisions have also played a role in their electoral decline.

The runoff election is scheduled for October 19, 2025. Voters will also elect senators and deputies in the general election, and the new officials are set to take office on November 8, 2025.
